Beginner’s Guide to Disc Golf

Updated: Oct 2, 2018

I moved to northern California last year and quickly realized that disc golf is a big deal here. I decided to give it a try and I've been hooked ever since. I think everyone should consider giving this amazing sport a chance. Disc golf is a sport that anyone, male or female, young or old, athlete or nerd, can enjoy.

Pros to playing Disc Golf:

1. It's Fun!

Disc golf is a sport that is easy to play and hard to master. It is challenging, requiring the player to use a combination of hand eye coordination and strategy to execute the perfect throw. Overcoming the challenges is very rewarding and it is very gratifying to hear the "Ching" of the chain net at the end of every hole.

2. It's Not Expensive!

Discs on average cost between ten and twenty bucks. Discs made from DX plastic typically cost less, however they don’t last as long. Most disc golf courses cost only five dollars for 18 holes, and a lot of public parks have courses that are free to play.

3. It's a Great Workout!

Just like regular golf, disc golf gets you outside enjoying nature while you’re playing a sport that you love. Walking eighteen holes of disc golf is like going for a three to five mile hike. It’s a low impact exercise and you will burn a ton of calories while having a great time.

4. The Community is Amazing!

I play a lot of sports, but I have never seen any community like the disc golf community. The people have all been welcoming and eager to help new players learn how to improve their game. There are a lot of Facebook groups that players can join to connect with other players in their community. I have met a lot of people while playing and this has led to many friendships.

What do you need to start playing disc golf?

To start playing disc golf you will need three discs. A putter, a mid-range and a driver. I started playing for only 30 bucks. I put them in a backpack and I went and played. It's honestly that easy.

What discs should I get?

Disks that I recommend.

Putters- Aviar, Judge, Roach

Mid Ranges- Mako3, Shark

Drivers- Destroyer, Valkyrie

Side Note: I would suggest writing your name and phone number on the bottom of every disk with a sharpie marker. This way if you lose a disc and someone finds it they can contact you. I personally have recovered a disc this way and have returned a disk to someone else.

Conclusion

Disk golf is a sport that anyone can play, it’s not expensive, it’s a great low impact workout and you will meet amazing people along the way. Now that you know what you need, get out there, play and enjoy!
